Our services

LaGrange Behavioral Health is committed to individualized treatment based on a collaborative approach. Some clients will have identified problems and others will come seeking clarification or understanding of changes that they desire.

Please see some common treatment areas and a brief description below:

Depression

Symptoms of depression can often express themselves in a change from an individual’s typical behavior. Often individuals will experience a change in sleep, interest in activity, eating habits or weight.

Anxiety-related Issues

Anxiety can produce many different symptoms and contribute to a number of clinical issues. Symptoms can include a general sense of feeling unsettled, limitations in work and social situations, and physical discomfort.

Life Transitions

Often individuals facing a transition will experience a shift in mood and functioning. Some examples of life transitions include marriage, divorce, graduation, death or health issues, and an introduction of new family members.

Gender and Sexual Identity

Exploration of different facets of identity may present some issues throughout the process. Having a safe space to discuss these issues or to explore them with guidance can alleviate some of the related stress.

Career Exploration

Many people experience uncertainty at some point in the duration of their careers. Working in a therapeutic environment to identify skills and desired work environments can help clarify career choices.

Sleep Problems

Sleep issues often result in inadequate rest or present as a symptom of another issue. Difficulties with falling or staying asleep can often be addressed through behavioral health treatment.

Chronic Pain

Prolonged pain can produce a number of subsequent problems including relational issues, work problems, and periods of sadness. Chronic pain may be most effectively addressed through both physical and psychological intervention.

Relationship Concerns

Whether you are having difficulties with a partner, roommate, or someone else in your life, a relationship issue can put significant strain on other areas. Addressing the concerns individually or jointly can allow for positive change.

Low self-esteem

A negative self-image can present in a number of ways, including body image and eating disorders. Addressing the relationship you have with yourself can improve your outlook as well as your relationships with others.

Common Questions

Many people wonder how therapy works, how long it goes on, and whether or not they are a good candidate for it. Here are a few commonly asked questions about my approach.

What is the process like?

Please send questions to Drsarah@lagrangebehavioralhealth.com or reach out through the contact form on this site. You may reach out via phone (812-340-6993), but the response will be delayed. You will receive a response with an offer to talk over the phone. During this call we will work with you to determine if you are in need of services and if LaGrange Behavioral Health (LBH) is the right place for you. If another provider or service may be a better match for your needs, we will provide you with appropriate referrals. If it is determined that you will work with LBH, Dr. LaGrange will discuss the intake process as well as cost and payment for services.

You will then attend an intake appointment where she’ll inquire about the issues that led you to seek services, what you’ve tried and what has helped or not helped. At the end of the visit, Dr. LaGrange will advise you on the next steps which may include services at LBH, recommendations, or an outside referral.

How long will it take?

Treatment length varies based on a number of factors. Oftentimes a problem that has been going on for many years may require more visits. However, some clients may find that they only need a few sessions to problem-solve and gain clarity. I have found that problems can be complex in nature and that providing a specific length of treatment at the outset can lead to disappointment should the issue persist. Once we agree to begin treatment, we will work together to determine frequency of treatment (once a week, every other week, etc.). We will assess progress throughout treatment to determine the duration of treatment.

What if we are not a good fit?

The therapeutic relationship between client and provider has been demonstrated as one of the most important factors in treatment outcomes (Lambert & Barley, 2001).* As such, it is important that you feel that the relationship between you and your provider is in good standing. The treatment process often includes the assessment and maintenance of a good relationship between client and therapist. You may find that addressing concerns in the therapeutic relationship not only improves the therapeutic relationship, but also contributes to improvement outside of the therapy office. However, if you come to the conclusion that we are not a good fit we will work to identify a more appropriate provider and I will provide you with a referral.

I am usually self-reliant. Should I really consider therapy?

Life presents challenges at different turns and oftentimes the issues that bring someone into treatment are not unlike previous ones. The difference may be the timing, the combination of stressors, or a heightened awareness of pattern. Many of us engage in patterns that have been helpful in the past, but become hindrances as we grow. Many people who are considering therapy have reached a level of self-awareness that allows them to seek outside solutions. If you have found yourself trying solutions that have previously worked, but longing for a different outcome then you may benefit from a new perspective. The goal of therapy is to help you clarify changes that you desire and to provide you with tools to create those changes now and in the future.

What about medication vs. psychotherapy?

Many problems are easily solved with psychotherapy alone. However, there are times when the treatment issues are more resistant to change or to one intervention alone. In such cases, Dr. LaGrange may recommend the addition of a medication to aid treatment progress. She may refer you to a psychiatrist or will work closely with your physician as a partner in your health care. In some cases, a combination of medication and therapy provides the most effective treatment outcome.

What is your approach to therapy?

My practice operates from an Integrative theoretical orientation, incorporating perspectives and interventions from many psychological theories. I believe that mental health treatment is complex in nature and requires consideration of individual needs. As such, I work with clients to identify problems and solutions based on a here-and-now assessment of need. Clients may find that the problem definition they held upon entering treatment evolves in the process. Flexibility in method and perspective helps honor those changes.

About Sarah

Sarah Lagrange

Psychologist in the state of Indiana and Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP).

Welcome to my practice. As a counseling psychologist, I strive to really engage my clients and work in a collaborative atmosphere to create change. Some of my clients have been in treatment before and are returning to continue the work or address new problems. Some are coming to treatment for the first time and may be apprehensive about the process. With that in mind, I work to provide a safe atmosphere by building a strong therapist-client relationship and then identify the patterns contributing to their problems.

I completed my Ph.D. at Indiana University in the APA-accredited Counseling Psychology program. I am currently licensed as a psychologist in the state of Indiana and maintain endorsement as a Health Service Provider in Psychology (HSPP). Prior to initiating my doctorate, I completed a Master’s in Counseling and Counselor Education at Indiana University which provided a foundation for my continued interest in behavioral health.

I began my clinical experience in 2008 at Bloomington Meadows Hospital, where I provided group and individual treatment in both acute and residential settings. I continued my practice in hospital settings, community mental health centers, and an integrative pain clinic. My most recent clinical experience was split between individual practice and Indiana University Counseling and Psychological Services. I am currently in private practice in Bloomington, Indiana.
